01/04/2008: Fatal MVA In Copiague
COPIAGUE, NY – At 11:55 p.m. on Friday, January 4, 2008 the Lindenhurst Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident at the corner of South Strongs Avenue and West Hoffman Avenue. As Babylon Central Fire Alarm was dispatching out the Lindenhurst Fire Department, Suffolk County Police requested ESU to respond in to 1361 Marconi Blvd for an overturned vehicle with entrapment. Moments later BCFA requested the chief put a rush on the Hurst tool as units on scene had pinned driver who was in bad condition. The accident happened just east of Garfield Avenue under the LIRR train tracks.
As units arrived on scene they found the driver of the vehicle trapped inside and in poor condition. The vehicle is believed to have been traveling east down Oak Street when it lost control, flipped and came crashing into a pylon supporting the LIRR tracks. The front engine was partially ejected from the vehicle. Lindenhurst firefighters and EMT’s quickly extricated the occupant and requested aviation fly in. A landing zone was requested to be setup at the Susan E. Wiley Elementary School on Scudder Avenue. However moments after the landing zone requested was toned out for Copiague Fire Department, aviation was cancelled as the patient’s vitals began to drop and the decision to transport via ground to Good Samaritan Hospital was made.
Despite the efforts of EMT’s on scene, the patient was pronounced dead at the hospital. Suffolk County Police along with MTA police remained on scene while a crime scene was setup closing down Marconi Blvd between Wartburg Avenue and N Strong Avenue as well as Oak Street between Garfield Avenue and S Strong Avenue.
