01/26/2008: Working Fire In North Amityville
NORTH AMITYVILLE, NY – At around 4:40 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2008 the North Amityville Fire Company responded to a “smoke in basement” call at 86 Coolidge Avenue. Central advised responding chef’s that they were taking numerous calls for this incident. Upon arrival by police and fire department personal thick smoke was pushing from the building. The first arriving chief requested the fire re-transmitted and a 13/35 was toned out. Amityville Village responded in as a F.A.S.T. assignment with Ladder Truck 1-1-15 and Engine 1-1-1.
First due Engine 1-7-3 picked up a hydrant at the corner of Coolidge Avenue and Rosewood Avenue and stretched 3 lines; one into the building, one to the rear and one to the side. Fire was pushing out of a basement window and side window while thick smoke began to push through the roof and windows.
As the fire progressed the Amityville F.A.S.T. assignment was put to work and Copiague responded in as the new F.A.S.T. assignment. Additional units on scene included North Amityville’s Heavy Rescue truck 1-7-5 for lights and Engine 1-7-10. Ambulances from North Amityville, Amityville and Copiague were on scene as well standing by.
Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within about an hour. No serious injuries to firefighters or civilians were reported although at least one firefighter did take in some smoke and required oxygen therapy. It is currently unknown what the cause of the fire was.
