01/31/2008: Tractor Trailer Blocks Traffic In Hicksville
HICKSVILLE, NY – Just before 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2008 the Hicksville Fire Department responded to the intersection of Broadway and Cherry Street for a fuel truck which had jackknifed and was halfway flipped over. According to units on scene, the driver of the tractor trailer was attempting a u-turn when a pin broke away from the harness seat which made the truck jackknife and in doing so, lifted the rear passenger side tires off the roadway. The driver quickly stopped his turn when he realized something was wrong which made quite a strange site in the intersection.
The Hicksville Fire Department responded in with multiple apparatus including their Hazardous Materials truck. The Nassau County Hazardous Materials team also responded in along with Nassau County Police and the Emergency Services Unit. Nassau County Police began to evacuate local business in case of a spill and closed off all roadways near the intersection.
The Hicksville Fire Department stretched two lines as a precaution and awaited the arrival of two heavy duty tow trucks and another tanker. While a second tanker began to unload the fuel from the first tanker, the two heavy duty tow trucks setup their booms on either side of the tanker truck so they could lower the tanker back onto the ground.
Emergency Units remained on scene for hours while the fuel was unloaded and the truck was brought safely back to the ground. There were no reported injuries and no fuel spills involved.
