06/02/2008: Working Fire In North Babylon
NORTH BABYLON, NY – Fighting their second working fire of the day (Monday, June 2, 2008), the North Babylon Fire Department was toned out to 93 North Foster Blvd where reports of a fire on the 2nd floor of a private dwelling came in. This time however, the home belonged to a firefighter and his family.
As chiefs responded to the fire they reported seeing black smoke in the air. Upon arrival by first responding chiefs, the working fire was transmitted and mutual aid departments began to respond in as well. West Islip started off as the first RIT assignment but when they were put to work West Babylon became the new RIT assignment.
Firefighters made their way through the front of the house and rear of the house, gaining access to the building via any means necessary. Firefighters accessed the roof and entered through small windows on the second floor possibly leading into an attic space. White smoke pushed out from the roof as firefighters began to make progress with the fire, which appeared to be contained to the 2nd floor.
Two firefighters sustained injuries and were transported to area hospitals via ambulances from North Babylon and West Babylon. It is currently unknown what the cause of the fire was, but thankfully the homeowners were able to escape uninjured. The condition of the two firefighters who were injured is unknown at the time this article was written.
