06/27/2007: Car Into Building In Hicksville
HICKSVILLE, NY – At around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2007 the Hicksville Fire Department responded to reports of a car into a building at 270 North Broadway. Upon arrival FD found a Honda Civic almost completely inside a commercial building. The driver of the Civic was nowhere to be found. Witnesses say that police found the driver up the block at which time they took him into custody for driving while under the influence. The driver was lucky to be alive as the roof of his vehicle was cut open like a tin can.
Due to heavy structural damage the Bethpage Fire Department Tactical Rescue Team was called to the scene to assist with stabilization and removal of the Civic. Bethpage’s Tactical Team setup a tent and began cutting wood boards to be used for stabilization. A torch was also put to use to cut away part of the structure while other crews used various saws to cut away portions of the building.
Once crews were able to free the vehicle from the structure they hooked up their winch and pulled the vehicle out from underneath the building. Wood boards were then put into place to support the load from the second floor. Bethpage is known throughout Nassau for their excellent tactical rescue team and tonight’s MVA proved to be a walk in the park for them. Hicksville and Bethpage worked together for over an hour to free the vehicle from the structure.
