07/02/2008: Working Fire On Oak Island
GREAT SOUTH BAY, NY – Around 12:35 a.m. on Wednesday, July 02, 2008 the Babylon Fire Department responded to a signal 13 in the vicinity of Oak Island. Initial reports indicated there was a fire on Oak Island west of the O.B.I. As first responding chiefs got on the road, Babylon Central advised they were taking multiple calls. Once fire personnel reached the Robert Moses Bridge a working fire was transmitted as a fully involved house fire was clearly visible from the bridge.
A staging area in the parking lot of the docks across from Oak Island (along Ocean Parkway) was setup and crews began to board boats headed towards the island. The United States Coast Guard along with Suffolk County Police Marine Units also responded to the fire.
While firefighters began to board boats and load cargo, explosions could be seen and heard coming from the house on the island. Multiple fire departments responded to the scene with fire boats to assist the Babylon Fire Department. Despite the house being fully involved and on an island, the fire was brought under control in about half an hour from the initial alarm.
It is currently unknown what the cause of the fire was. An investigation will take place as the homeowner was not home during the fire. Thankfully no injuries were reported during this fire.
