07/18/2008: House Fire In North Babylon
NORTH BABYLON, NY – At 12:29 a.m. on Friday, July 18, 2008 the North Babylon Fire Department responded to a house fire at 12 Ann Court. As first responding chief’s neared the scene they advised dispatch that they had black smoke in the area and transmitted a working fire. Upon arrival the chief was met with a working fire in a 2 story private dwelling.
Engine 1-8-8 of North Babylon FD picked up a hydrant and stretched three lines to the structure while Ladder 1-8-6 of North Babylon FD raised a bucket to the roof to begin ventilation. West Islip responded in as the RIT assignment with Engine 3-17-1 but en route they were instructed to act as a truck company and Deer Park was requested as the new RIT. Deer Park could not get out initially so West Islip sent Ladder Truck 3-17-5 as the new RIT assignment. Once Deer Park was on the road they were put to work as another truck company utilizing 1-4-14. Other departments assisting were the Babylon Fire Department with Engine 1-2-6 and the West Babylon Fire Department with Engine 1-9-6. Ambulances from North Babylon, Babylon and West Islip were also on scene aiding in rehab for the firefighters.
Despite the efforts by firefighters on scene, a good portion of the house was destroyed due to the amount of fire they were met with upon arrival. The rear southwest corner of the house took the most damage as this was where the bulk of the fire appeared to have initiated from. This began to spread throughout the home and into the attic space and other rooms. The cause of the fire is still under investigation at the time of this article and has yet to be determined.
