08/27/2008: Overturned Auto In Deer Park
DEER PARK, NY – The Deer Park Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident Wednesday (August 27, 2008) night. The accident occurred at the corner of Deer Park Avenue and Grand Blvd. As first arriving units arrived on scene they requested heavy rescue and aviation respond in.
The accident occurred when a 2001 Suzuki Motorcycle, occupied by two people, struck a 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara occupied by one person. The motorcycle was heading south on Route 231 while the Grand Vitara was heading north on Route 231, making a left onto Grand Blvd. When the motorcycle struck the Grand Vitara the two occupants were thrown from the motorcycle and through the rear window of the Grand Vitara, which also rolled over. Meanwhile the Suzuki motorcycle caught fire.
The driver of the Suzuki Grand Vitara was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. However, the two motorcycle riders became pinned in the back of the Grand Vitara. One of the riders’ legs was reportedly pinned under the back of the vehicle while the other was pinned inside.
Firefighters worked together to stabilize the vehicle and cut the roof off the vehicle in order to free the two pinned people. The operator of the motorcycle was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital via a police helicopter where he was listed with serious injuries at the time of this article. His passenger was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital where she was listed in critical condition at the time of this article.
Along with the Deer Park Fire Department, the North Babylon Fire Department and Suffolk County ESU also assisted with patient care/extrication. Despite all the factors involved in this call from a vehicle fire to patient extrication the members of the Deer Park Fire Department and North Babylon Fire Department worked flawlessly to tackle any problem that arose.
